Le handball est un sport collectif de ballon rond qui se joue avec les mains. Deux équipes de 7 joueurs (6 joueurs de champ et un gardien de but) s'affrontent sur un terrain rectangulaire de 20 mètres par 40 mètres. L’objectif est de mettre le ballon dans le but adverse. C'est un sport complet. Il fait travailler à la fois les bras (même s’il est vrai que l’un des bras travaille plus que l’autre) et les jambes, avec des déplacements dans l’axe mais également des déplacements latéraux. C’est un sport avec des efforts courts et rapides plutôt qu’un sport d’endurance. Il ne nécessite pas d’importantes capacités aérobies mais développera surtout l’aptitude à ces efforts brefs et intenses. C’est un sport collectif intelligent dans lequel le caractère social est important.
