Le gommier tire son nom de l'arbre dans le tronc duquel était creusée cette embarcation traditionnelle des indiens Caraïbes. Le tronc creusé fournit une base sur laquelle on ajoute des planches qui formeront les bords du bateau. Délaissé depuis quelques temps déjà, comme moyen de transport des personnes et des marchandises, le gommier n’a plus d’avenir non plus, en tant que bateau de pêche. Construction et matériaux nouveaux, techniques de navigation modernes le condamnent définitivement. Heureusement il renaît aujourd’hui comme voilier de loisirs et de compétition.
